"Getting Trashed" Ron Arnold

Wise Use Movement uses of fear…."The American Dream is in trouble"

-fear about economic survival (losing jobs)

-fear about losing wealth (land is taken away by govt)

-fear about losing power (power is transferred from individual to govt.)

The culprit—the environmental movement.

 Wise-Use philosophy does not accept:

--the fundamental assumption of scarcity

--a full-cost environmental accounting system

-- full magnitude of the "environmental crisis" (in fact, the mainstream env. orgs are fabricating crisis)

"The artificial resource scarcity and high cost of doing business created by this New Environmental Regime has sapped the American economy of its profit margin, leaving nothing for growth—trashing the economy." (p. 5)

Environmental costs are too high—

NRDC report on Alar and other carcinogenic chemicals (Mothers and Others for Pesiticide Limits story in "Grass Roots"

 Trashing Cities—

-unfunded mandates are causing cities to collapse financially

Trashing Development—

--State growth management acts destroy traditional land control

Trashing Property rights—

--wetlands protection

--private property rights are a "natural" right

Trashing Finance—

--businesses are being hurt financially by environmental regs

Trashing Farms—

--wetland protection results in lost farmland

Trashing people—

--ESA harms people, does not protect species

Trashing industry—

Governement as Enemy

"The Nature Conservancy, Earth First!, and the Audubon Society have pushed ranchers to the brink of extermination with demands to take private and government lands out of livestock production."

Trashing our Minds—

--Green guilt has become a way of life.

--dispute the Greenhouse Effect, Ozone depletion, Acid Rain

"Environmentalism is today’s essential expression of post-gratification forgetting and devaluation."

Environmentalism creates an ethic of genocide.
