Opinion: A conflict of interests

By John McCann

Why is it that GMC students are very often left in the dark? Four years ago there were countless rumors regarding GMC going bankrupt. Students were given just enough information to spark pessimistic creativity. Since then there have been countless things from which rumor originated. We think we know why people get fired, why South hasn't been renovated yet, etc. We also think we should know. If we attended a "real" college with above 600 people (we also think we know how many people are actually enrolled here) none of this information would really be our business.

Anything that was, would be explained in full. Here at GMC, we are constantly tossed tidbits, ambiguities, and what some call outright lies. Most recently rumors were spawned from the thefts in Lyman. We received an announcement from our Dean of Student Life that basically said "We got nothing." I don't blame them, but I believe that it is just enough information to set minds afire with stories of master keys, framings, predetermined thefts, and many more.

What's a student to do? Should we ignore things so as to mask our unrest? Should we complain loud enough so that we are given full access to all information? I don't know the answer, but it seems that things will keep rolling as they do here at GMC. The student body will complain to those who can do nothing until they forget about it and ultimately get back to their undeniably laid back college career.
